The Central Kiloparsec-Scale Structure of Galaxies
This review summarizes some aspects of the central kiloparsec scale structure of galaxies, and in particular spiral galaxies, elliptical galaxies and merger remnants. The focus is on results from optical and near-IR imaging and spectroscopy, with emphasis on recent work with the Hubble Space Telescope.
متن کاملKinematics in the Central Kiloparsec of Spiral Galaxies
Results from kinematic observations of the central regions of spiral galaxies are reviewed, with particular emphasis on starburst and AGN hosts. While morphological studies lead to important insight, a more complete understanding of the physical processes that drive the evolution of the central regions can be achieved with measurements of the kinematics of gas and stars. Here, a variety of obse...
متن کاملThe Kiloparsec-scale Kinematics of High-redshift Star-forming Galaxies
We present the results of a spectroscopic survey of the kinematic structure of star-forming galaxies at redshift z ∼ 2 − 3 using Keck/OSIRIS integral field spectroscopy. Our sample is comprised of 12 galaxies between redshifts z ∼ 2.0 and 2.5 and one galaxy at z ∼ 3.3 which are well detected in either Hα or [O iii] emission. These galaxies are generally representative of the mean stellar mass o...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملNear-infrared long-slit spectra of Seyfert galaxies: gas excitation across the central kiloparsec⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆
Context. The excitation of the gas phase of the interstellar medium can be driven by various mechanisms. In galaxies with an active nucleus, such as Seyfert galaxies, both radiative and mechanical energy from the central black hole, or the stars in the disk surrounding it may play a role. Aims. We investigate the relative importance and range of influence of the active galactic nucleus for the ...
